Real talk
Somebody sent you. That’s fine.
A judge, a caseworker, a probation officer — somebody with a stamp and a signature told you where to be. We’re not going to pretend otherwise. You don’t have to want to be here. You just have to show up. The work still works.
This is not a class where somebody spends every session telling you you’re a bad parent. It’s a skills class. Most parents who end up here didn’t plan to hurt anybody — they ran out of sleep, help, patience, or room, and what came out came out faster than they could stop it. That’s not an excuse. It’s fixable, because it’s a skill, and skills can be taught.
Guilt says“I did something wrong.” Guilt makes you fix it.
Shame says“I am something wrong.” Shame makes you hide.
In this class we stay in the business of guilt and out of the business of shame. You can’t be accountable for something you’re too ashamed to look at.
“You are not the worst thing you ever did.” — Dr. Derek Collins, Effective Parenting, Session 1
